How to Detangle a Synthetic Wig

What do you do if your wig gets so tangled and looks matted?  Can you bring it back to life?

Here are a few tips to help bring life back into your wig.

The first bit of advice would be to always take special care of your wig.  The more tangled the wig is the harder it is to bring the wig back to its original condition. Always wash and condition your hair wig at least every 6 -7 wears.

However, there are some great products and with a little bit of patience you can bring it back.

Wig DetanglerWig Detangler is a great product.  After you have washed and conditioned your wig, lightly spray detangler throughout the whole wig.  Use a wide tooth wig comb and work gently from the bottom tips about an inch at a time in sections. As each section becomes smooth and the comb glides easily through work on the next section until you have been through the whole wig.  You can use wig detangler every day to keep your wig looking good on dry hair too.

For Heat Defiant Synthetic Wigs, the Easihair Smooth Detangler is a great product that can be used daily.Simply spray lightly on the wig each day and comb through.  Allow the wig to dry and you are ready for the day.  This product eliminates frizz and helps maintain the healthy shine and body of the wig.

Human Hair Care Kit2For Human Hair wigs, The Jon Renau Human Hair Kit includes a Moroccan Oil Treatment which will help with tangles as well.  You can just rub your fingertips with the Moroccan oil through the hair and comb through starting from the bottom and working your way up to the crown. The Human hair specially formulated Shampoo and Conditioner is a great way to keep your wig in great condition.

Just a couple of things to note:

  • When detangling a wig always start with small sections at the bottom of the wig and gradually work your way up until you have combed through and detangled each section.  Excessive combing and pulling on hair can cause the wig to loose hair.
  • If you manage your wig each day the upkeep is much less.  The more tangled the wig is, the harder it is to bring it back.

Styling a Human Hair Wig

Human Hair Wigs can be difficult as they do need styling after each wash.  Synthetic hair wigs are treated so they bounce back in to shape after each wash.  Choosing between a synthetic or human hair wig is a personal preference.  Some people just love the feel and look of human hair wigs while others do not.

At Wigs Online we deal with Jon Renau as one of our suppliers of human hair wigs.  The quality of their wigs are unsurpassable.  I read an article on their blog this morning and thought it had some great points to remember when styling your human hair wig.

There are a few tips that should be kept in mind when styling a human hair wig:

Always wash the wig with a good quality shampoo and conditioner.  At Wigs Online we have a specially formulated Shampoo, Conditioner and Argan oil.

Do not rub the hair so hard to tangle the fibres.  Just blot with a towel the excess water.

Always use a wide tooth comb and start gently combing from the bottom of the hair.

Style the hair in sections  using only a moderate heat.  Not too much heat.

Use the cool button on your hair dryer if you have one.

If you need to use a flat iron use a heat protector spray on the hair before you start blowdrying the hair.

Wig Care

Caring for your wig in the correct way will ensure that you get the most out of your wig both in terms of keeping it looking great as well as having it last a little longer. Our Wig Care page offers a little advice on caring for your wig and the accessories you may need.

Feel free to post any tips and tricks you have for taking care of your wig.

Human Hair V’s Synthetic Fibre

What is the Difference between Human Hair and Synthetic Fibre Wigs?

We often get asked this question so we created a page dedicated to it.

What do you choose?

As a first time wearer it can be very confusing and there is so much to consider. One of the first decisions is whether to buy synthetic hair or human hair. Its a decision for each person to be made depending on their needs, budget and what is important to them.

Surprisingly most people will probably find it difficult to pick the difference between the look of human hair and synthetic hair. The structure of the cap will probably play a bigger part in the realistic and natural look of a wig rather than the fibre. Its important to know how to look after each fibre as they are different.

Human Hair

Human hair is collected from different sources from all over the world. Once its collected it is sanitised, stripped and dyed again to the colour required. Human Hair can be styled with heat and can be coloured or dyed. It is very versatile and will last a lot longer than synthetic wigs. After washing and conditioning a wig, the human hair will need to be restyled as it wont hold the style so you need to restyle the wig after every wash. Human hair wigs will last much longer than synthetic or heat defiant wigs. As long as the wig is treated and looked after carefully a human hair wig will last up to 12 months or maybe even longer. Hence, human hair wigs are generally much more expensive than synthetic wigs.

Synthetic Hair Wigs

Synthetic hair wigs are not as expensive as human hair wigs. However, there are a few drawbacks with synthetic hair. Synthetic wigs may only last a few months but they are not as expensive as the human hair wigs. Synthetic wigs cant be restyled with heat but they will hold their style even after washing. Some clients will find that synthetic wigs are easier to take care of rather than human hair wigs. With the price of synthetic wigs you can buy 2 or even 3 synthetic ones for the same price. The range of Synthetics is much bigger and the colour range is much wider as well. Some colours are too hard for manufacturers to achieve in human hair. For example, very platinum blond, grey or white hair can become very brittle and break in the manufacturing process.

Heat Defiant Synthetic Wigs

Heat Defiant wigs are heat friendly synthetic wigs. They are synthetic wigs that you can style with low heat. If a wig frizzes with the friction of the hair to your clothes you can spray the hair with a heat protector and simply run the hair straightener through the fibre on a low heat no more than 160 degrees celsius. Heat defiant fibres can make it much easier to revive a wig.

It really is a personal choice of whether you want an easy style that you don’t need to worry about or you want to be able to style and recreate your own style. All fibres have advantages and disadvantages. Your budget will play a part in the decision. There is simply no right or wrong in this decision. It really is a personal choice.
